220kV Interconnect Switching Station and 220kV / 33kV Collector Substations Owner’s Engineering
OVERVIEW
Project Summary
220kV Interconnect Switching Station and 220kV / 33kV Collector Substations Owner’s Engineering
Radiant Energy and Eldosol Energy Limited (Radiant / Eldosol) have successfully developed two state-of-the-art 40MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants, Selenkei and Cedate, in the heart of Uasin Gishu County, near Eldoret, Kenya. The plants are located next to each other on the same site.
Each plant has a 220kV / 33kV collector substation, equipped with a 45MVA transformer bay and a 33kV GIS substation, housing seven (7) feeder bays. These substations play a crucial role in ensuring efficient power collection and distribution.
The collector substations are integrated with a 220kV switching station, featuring four (4) feeder bays and a dedicated step-up transformer. The switching station is designed with a breaker-and-a-half scheme that seamlessly connects to the Lessos-Turkwell 220kV transmission line by means of a 1km double circuit loop in / loop out configuration.
The 220kV switching station and overhead line was built by Radiant / Eldosol on behalf of KPLC (Kenyan Power and Lighting Company). Following successful commissioning, ownership and operational responsibilities were transferred to KPLC.
Appointed as the owner’s engineer, PEC provided invaluable expertise throughout the development of the Selenkei and Cedate collector substations and the 220kV interconnection switching station.
This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence. With the successful commissioning and handover of these solar PV power plants, Radiant Energy and Eldosol Energy have significantly contributed to Kenya’s renewable energy landscape, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
